Diamond couple Ted and Mary Davis celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary today and say the secret to a long marriage is give and take.

The couple, of Raffin Lane, Pewsey, were both born in the village and met when Mr Davis was a baker and Mrs Davis worked nearby at the surgery.

Mr Davis, 84, said: “When I went up to get flour I saw this girl and I thought she looked nice and then I kept seeing her. I went to talk to her one day when she was with her sister and that was it really.”

One of their first dates was to Pewsey Carnival, and after four years of courting the couple married in 1955 at St John the Baptist Church.

About 100 guests helped the couple celebrate before they headed to South Wales for their honeymoon.

Six months after getting married they moved into a house in Milton Road, where they lived for four years.

The couple, who both worked as posties, later had a house built in Raffin Lane where they have lived for 49 years.

One of their most treasured memories was a weekend visit to The Ritz in March 1986, which they won after entering a competition with an oil company.

Their daughters Libby and Sue, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren will help them celebrate their anniversary at a tea party for family and friends at the Pewsey Scout Hall this weekend.

Mrs Davis, 79, said: “You’ve got to have give and take. Now we’re joined at the hip, but if I want to go out I would tell him and if he wanted to he would tell me and I’d say okay. We have a very strong family too. We’re all very close and that’s important.”
