Dedicated members of Calne Scout Group were presented with their Chief Scout Gold and Silver awards by the High Sheriff of Wiltshire on Friday.

The Chief Scout awards – gold for Scouts and silver for Cubs – are the highest awards available and were presented at an awards evening at the Scout hall in Quarr Barton.

The gold award is gained by completing eight challenges, from community and fitness to creative and outdoor, with each taking from 10 to 30 hours to finish.

Mike Curry, chairman of 1st Calne Scouts, said: “We have over 100 young members and only about five per cent of them are able to reach these awards with their hard work and commitment.”

The growing success of the group, and the desire to increase numbers, has led to calls for more volunteers in running the activities.

Mr Curry said: “To actually make the group run there are a lot of people in the background to run events and support the group.”

Volunteers can be involved as assistant leaders or behind the scenes by applying for grants, giving as much or as little time as they are able to.
