I am grateful for the article by Nel Staveley highlighting the need for men to be vigilant regarding prostate cancer (February 19). As one who has had the condition for seven years and knowing that the cancer is held in remission by hormonal therapy, I am thankful that I followed early advice. This came about because I was a hospital chaplain for many years and on occasions stood by the bedside of men whose lives could have been saved if they had overcome their reluctance to visit the doctor.

I decided, following a conversation with the consultant, who said “one day we are all going to get it”, to have annual tests and after six years the cancer was diagnosed. This letter is prompted by the fact that, only last week, I was stopped by a member of the public, a complete stranger, who thanked me for urging him, at an event some time ago, to present for tests.

He was convinced that he was perfectly fit, however, he decided to do something about it. Following tests the cancer was discovered and an operation ensued. I would urge all men to read that article again.
