Family and friends came together to celebrate Irene Harris's 100th birthday on Saturday.

Mrs Harris marked the special occasion by having a party at The Cedars Residential Home, in Purton, where she lives.

Irene’s special day started with her loved ones letting off 100 balloons in her 
honour and ended with a dazzling fireworks display.

She received dozens of birthday cards and was particularly proud of the commemorative one which she received from the Queen.

Granddaughter Michelle Denbow said: “It is great to get everyone together.

“Nan is on fine form at the minute and cannot understand what all the fuss is about. It is wonderful to get so many family and friends together to celebrate this milestone.

“Nan is a lovely caring person, who has always said what she means, and cares deeply for her family. We are all so extremely proud of her.

“She has worked hard all her life and deserves to feel special celebrating her 100th birthday.”

Irene was born in Bridge Street, Swindon, on February 21, 1915 and her parents were Frederick and Irene May Selby. She spent a lot of her younger life living in Chippenham.

In 1939, she married Albert Harris. They had three children, Janet, Pauline and Judith. She also raised her half-sister Joan. Albert died in 1981. 

Mrs Harris has spent much of her life living in Malmesbury and has dedicated many years volunteering to help disadvantaged people. 

She has seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. She has worked as a school dinner lady, with the Red Cross and for the Civil Defence.’ 100th birthday on Saturday.
