The Wessex Life Science Cluster (WLSC) is preparing to mark its first major milestone as it hosts a launch event aimed at bringing together the rapidly developing life sciences community in the region.

The newly-created WLSC has a mission to champion the emerging Life Science Cluster – with a bold new science park being developed at Porton, which will bring many new skilled jobs to the county in the fields of science and engineering.

They are to use the launch event at Salisbury City Hall on Tuesday, March 3, to raise awareness of the exciting work taking place in life sciences in Wiltshire and across the wider region.

The launch event will be free to attend, thanks to sponsorship from Wiltshire Council and the Wessex Academic Health Science Network (WAHSN).

Registration at Salisbury’s City Hall is at 9.30am, when those attending will have a chance to look at the WLSC’s “Let’s Talk, Let’s do Business” stands. The stands will offer information about access to finance, public sector support, tax benefits for research, intellectual property protection and NHS commercial opportunities.

A number of speakers will feature during the course of the day, including Andy Burroughs, director of wealth and enterprise at the Wessex Academic Health Science Network, Karl Simpson, director of the Wessex Life Sciences Cluster, and Tom Wainwright, director of the Orthopaedic Research Institute.

Fleur de Rhe Philipe, cabinet member for economic development and skills, said: “These really are exciting times in the field of life sciences, with the planning now well underway for the new science park at Porton, and events such as this bringing together a growing community of highly-skilled experts in the county.”

The event has been designed as an opportunity for business networking, promoting applied research, and a chance for the media to find out more about the growing life sciences sector in the region.

Refreshments and a hot lunch will be provided.
