Charitable organisation The Big Community Grow started work on a project with Trowbridge Youth Parliament to make a community garden in Trowbridge Park on Saturday.

The project is part of a competition launched by Friends of Trowbridge Park in 2014 to design a community garden for the park. The winning design by the charity was then approved by Trowbridge Town Council.

It is being done in partnership with Trowbridge Youth Parliament – pupils from the area’s schools – and is called the Garden for the Next Generation.

It is being made near the Civic Centre and Odeon Cinema and includes sustainable plants which reflect the town’s history.

Mel Jacob, who founded The Big Community Grow with Jacky Good, said: “We had a great turnout with Trowbridge Youth Parliament members from lots of school helping to weed and plant bulbs.

“We have had a number of generous donations from local businesses, including Apetito, Shanley’s, and The Consortium and grant funding from Wessex Watermark and Trow bridge Area Board.

“This will all go towards the cost of the garden project – we are still looking for more sponsorship and hope local companies with take the opportunity to get involved.”

The garden opens on June 14 followed by the Magna Carta Big Lunch – a medieval celebration in the park from noon-4pm.
