CAMPAIGNERS say their unsuccessful attempt to stop a 28-home development in Studley has at least brought the village together.

Last Wednesday Wiltshire Council’s north area planning committee approved an application by the site owners, the Trustees of the Bowood Reversioners Trust, to develop the former Blounts Court nursery, having rejected a similar proposal in August.

Despite the decision, a new village group formed to organise events and activities has been described as a positive outcome after a demanding 12-month campaign.

Janet Robbins, from Studley, said: “We are, of course, very disappointed about the outcome of the application. Unfortunately, this decision has allowed a developer to determine suitable sites, rather than the community.

“What has been most important is the way in which we have conducted ourselves. We are also pleased that this has brought our little village together.”

Lord Lansdowne and the Bowood Estate are delighted with the Blounts Court decision because the revenue will be reinvested into the estate.

He said: “I do appreciate the concerns of those who opposed the application but there are definite positive outcomes. There will be a reduced speed limit on the A4, from 60mph to 40mph, on either side of a pelican crossing.”

Councillors voted nine to one in favour of the development on the brownfield site.
