Superheroes of all shapes and sizes were out in force around the county raising money for Children in Need.

At Devizes School sixth formers dressed up and other students and staff baked cakes to sell – raising £115 in one 15-minute break.

Deputy head of sixth form Nicola Corry said: “It was a great event and much appreciated by hungry students.”

Cakes and baking were also to the fore in Bromham at a Bake Off-style event organised by BBC Wiltshire.

Enwezor Nzegwu, a competitor on this year’s Bake Off, cycled from Portsmouth to Bromham to raise money and judge the cakes.

Vaughan’s Kitchen put on a baking demonstration and the fundraiser in Bromham Social Centre raised £2,000.

About 60 youngsters at Sixpenny Nursery in Devizes dressed as Batman, Superman and Ninja Turtles among other characters to raise about £75.

Manager Paddy Griffin said: “Everyone really enjoyed it.”

At Fussell Wadman garage in Devizes director Mark Wadman left the dressing up to his staff including his son Jorge but he will be doing his bit by cycling from the Peugeot head office in Paris to its UK headquarters in Coventry next spring.

He said: “We did a car wash and cake sale with most of the staff dressed up as superheroes or wearing Pudsey onesies but I didn’t actually put on a costume. We will be contributing £1,000.”

The youngsters at Tumble Tots classes in Chippenham also dressed up.

Debbie Bensley, Tumble Tots franchisee for Chippenham, Trowbridge and Bath, said: “The children have been having an absolute ball, they’ve loved it.”

NatWest customers were greeted by an eagle owl and lanner falcon in the Chippenham branch on Friday. The birds of prey were promoting the bank’s Children in Need raffle, with prizes donated by their local business customers.

Rob Evans from Wings & Talons said he was delighted to donate a bird of prey experience. He said: “Children in Need is about giving – even just a small amount.”

Staff wore pyjamas and the branch raised more than £668.

Sheldon School in Chippenham raised £2,760 through cake sales, dodgeball and wearing superhero outfits and brightly coloured spots and stripes.

Sixth formers organised a Would I Lie To You? game show that raised £560.

All pupils and staff at Heddington Primary School wore pyjamas and brought a teddy into school. They raised £200 with a cake sale and by covering Pudsey’s face on the playground in coins.

Headteacher Ashley Martin said: “The kids love getting dressed up and for Children in Need, they really make the effort.”

Morrisons in Chippenham raised just over £800 shaving heads and waxing chests in the store’s foyer.
