Nathan Hamblin is helping to keep alive the memory of his grandfather who was known as Pumpkin Joe.

Joe Burbidge organised a pumpkin contest at The Brewery Inn at Seend for years but after his death aged 82 in 2010 the tradition stopped.

Last year the competition was revived and on Sunday the pumpkins were out again at the pub, which even has a pumpkin on its sign alongside that of a jolly, elderly man who many think is a depiction of Pumpkin Joe.

Among those taking part on Sunday was Nathan, 21, who kept family honour alive by winning the best carved pumpkin award. The adult winner of the biggest pumpkin was Keith Bottomley whose giant specimen measured 67ins wide.

Under 14 winner Lashana Hutchinson’s pumpkin was only an inch smaller. Nathan’s mum Jacky Hamblin said her father would have been proud of his grandson.

She said: “He would have been very chuffed with the whole thing. He was very keen on pumpkins, which he grew in his garden and loved to encourage others to grow them as well.”

The contest was revived last year by Jay Stellard, who used to work at the The Brewery Inn. She said: “This year once again it was a a lovely community event with lots of people coming along to join in the fun.”

Mrs Stellard and Mrs Hamblin thanked licensees Carol and Norman Fry for helping with the organisation. The pumpkins were judged by John Tilley, an old friend of Mr Burbidge. Mrs Hamblin said: “It was very fitting that John was the judge.”
