The biggest review of parking ever undertaken in Wiltshire will start on Monday as people across the county are consulted.

Wiltshire Council will start be releasing background information on every town that includes everything from population to housing growth.

This will be followed on November 10 by a questionnaire that will list every car park under the council’s control and give an option for its future including charges.

People can either agree with the suggestion or give their own view on how much, if anything, should be charged and if it should be a long stay or short stay park.

Council deputy leader John Thomson jokingly said: “Jane (council leader Jane Scott) gives me all the best jobs. This is a difficult one but we are determined to make it work.”

Coun Thomson said that when the unitary council was formed in 2009 it inherited many car parks from the district authorities all will different price scales.

In 2011 it brought in banding for car parks which meant that towns of similar sizes and with similar facilities charged the same amount. At the time the council promised to review this within four years.

Coun Thomson said the parking review would mean that each town would be looked at individually and he wanted people who live, work and shop in the areas to be involved.

Public meetings will not be held but the council will be holding invitation only get togethers with town and parish councils, chambers of commerce and area boards.

The questionnaires and charging summaries will be available on-line at the council’s website and in libraries and community hubs.

Consultation will close on January 16.
