Police have now confirmed that all three people arrested in connection with the attack on a 42-year-old man from the Devizes area in the town during the early hours of Saturday are local.

Earlier it had been stated that one of the men arrested was from Bath but today Wiltshire police said a 26 year-old female, a 20 year-old male and a 19 year-old female are all from Devizes and were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

They have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The victim was being treated at Great Western Hospital in Swindon for a head injury but is now at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, in a critical but stable condition.

Wiltshire Police would like to hear from anyone who was near The Brittox in the early hours of Saturday morning and are also asking for local businesses to contact them if they have CCTV footage of the surrounding area.

Detective Constable Tom Allen, of Melksham CID, said: "The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning when nightclubs were starting to close and many people would have been in the area of The Brittox when the assault occurred.

"I would appeal to the public to come forward with any information about this incident. It is often the case that the smallest piece of information can lead to a prosecution.”

"Whilst this type of crime is uncommon in the Devizes area, the impact on the victims can be significant.

"Violence such as this can have dire consequences and will be dealt with robustly by Wiltshire Police."

Anyone who saw what happened, or who has any information, is asked to contact Detective Constable Tom Allen via 101.

Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
