Police are appealing for witnesses after the death of a woman who was struck by a car in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The woman, who suffered a serious head injury, died yesterday evening at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Members of her family were with her.

The incident happened just after 2.20am on the A361 near Hilperton, Trowbridge.

It is believed a grey Audi A3 hit the woman as she was walking along the roadside with her male partner, who is 32 and lives in Trowbridge.

The 22-year-old driver, from Melksham, was understood to have stopped at the scene but left before police arrived.

He later went to Melksham police station to report the incident and was initially arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has not been charged and has been bailed to return at a later date.

A Collison Investigation Unit team is still at the scene.

Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the car before the incident.
