The popular Wharf Theatre in Devizes may have to close if it doesn’t get more volunteers to help keep it running.

The theatre, run completely by volunteers, has been at The Wharf since 1974 when it was leased to them by the council after the Devizes and District Amateur Dramatic Society lost its home at the Elm Tree Inn.

If more volunteers and help are not found then the theatre may have to scale back future productions or close its doors.

Publicity manager Alison Radevsky said: “We do know that people love attending the theatre, but maybe they don't appreciate that they could get involved, on or off stage, with as little or as much commitment as they choose.

“There are many ways that people can get involved in the theatre.

“We need technical people to help with lights and sound, artistic people to work on stage and scenery; organised, efficient people to help with admin, IT whizzes to improve our website and e-mails and lots of smiley, friendly faces to be our front of house welcome on performance nights to check tickets along with selling ice creams and programmes.”

Ms Radevsky has said the theatre has already had to be very careful about the productions it commits to because of the limited supply of people to help, particularly on the technical front.

“We’re sure there are lots of people out there, who’d like to get involved – they’ll meet new people, use existing skills and maybe learn new ones, and have fun, while helping to ensure that the Wharf carries on staging really high-quality amateur theatre,” she said.

“Whatever people would like to help with, we can almost certainly find them a role.

“The Wharf Theatre needs you!”
