Young fundraisers Megan Harris and Sophie Wright have presented a cheque for £317 to our Give Us A Chance appeal for Devizes Opportunity Centre.

The two 13-year-olds visited the centre last Wednesday to hand over the money raised by having a non-uniform day and cake stall at Pewsey Vale School.

Megan is the daughter of the centre’s deputy manager Donna Harris and knew about the important work carried out by the opportunity nursery.

Mrs Harris said: “She has popped in occasionally and seen what we do and when she knew about the appeal she said she wanted to do something to help.

“She came up with the idea of a non-uniform day, cake stall and selling fake tattoos and then she had to explain to teachers why she wanted to do it.

“It has been very good for her confidence. I am very proud of her.”

Megan roped in best friend Sophie to help organise and run the event held at the school last term.

Praise for the girls has also come from headteacher Carol Grant who said: “Megan and Sophie worked so hard to organise this non-school uniform day.

“Their determination and excellent organisational skills have raised much needed additional funding for the Devizes Opportunity Centre.”

The money will go towards our Give Us A Chance appeal which was launched earlier this year when funding of £10,000 was cut by Wiltshire Council after the Government withdrew a grant. The centre has to raise about £50,000 this year to supplement its council grant.

Money for the appeal is also being raised by sale of wristbands by parent Sarah Morgan and so far has raised £168.

Some of the bands, which come in a variety of colours, are available from the centre’s office.

The nursery is also urging supporters to vote for them in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund.

It could receive £3,000 if it receives the most votes for the Devizes area. Go to www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund before October 10.
