I’m writing this week’s column from Scotland, where I’ve joined the campaign for a ‘No’ vote in the referendum, to help keep our country together and save us from a messy divorce.

I know from my constituency mailbag that many English Brits in Wiltshire would be sad to lose Scotland, and Scots who’ve moved here have told me they would be furious to see Scotland become a different country without having had a say themselves. Truth is, many families extend across the border, including my own, and would rather us work to build a better future together.

Last year, the Coalition government increased the amount we give in overseas aid to 0.7 per cent of national income, making the UK the first G7 country to reach the target agreed by the United Nations more than 40 years ago.

In Parliament last week, I joined MPs of all parties to vote for a Private Member’s Bill brought by my Liberal Democrat colleague Michael Moore to enshrine that target in law, so that all governments will have a duty to meet it.

This will ensure that we always keep our promise to the world’s poorest. It will also set an example to other countries, encouraging them to follow Britain’s lead and increase the aid they give to the 0.7 per cent target as well.

Readers will know of my enthusiastic support for renewable energy. Last month, I met residents in Broughton Gifford who raised concerns about recent applications to build a number of solar power projects surrounding the village. Renewable energy generation, like homes and offices, needs to be well-sited and carefully planned.

So, in the House of Commons, whilst welcoming the decision to grant planning permission for the proposed solar project behind Trowbridge’s Canal Road industrial estate, I also highlighted to Ministers the need to protect historic buildings officially listed by English Heritage in rural villages like Broughton Gifford.

I am delighted to report that more than 2,000 people have now signed the petition I’m running with my team of local councillors to restore one hour of free parking in car parks across the county.

It’s great to see so many people backing our campaign to help our town centres thrive. To add your support, please visit www.wiltshirefreeparking.org.

My next constituency surgery will be at The Pound arts centre in Corsham on Monday, September 29 from 1pm to 2.30pm.
