Rifleman Dan Churnside has won an army award after finishing his recruit training.

Rifleman Churnside, 21, from Marlborough, completed the Combat Infantryman’s course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.

His platoon commander, Captain Robert Parsons, said: “Rifleman Churnside has been awarded the Best Recruit prize. He didn’t have a bad day throughout the six months’ course. He performed to a consistently high standard even when given extra responsibilities. It is a well deserved award.”

Rifleman Churnside received his award at the pass-out parade ceremony at the Infantry Training Centre on Friday.

Rifleman Churnside said: “I’ve always thought about the army as a career, but I made the decision to actually join up quite suddenly. Looking back on my time at Catterick, I can honestly say it was a life-changing experience. Again, if I look back, a lot of it was fun even though I might not have thought so at the time.”

He will soon join his new unit the 1st Battalion The Rifles based in Chepstow.
