The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a traditional-style outdoor baptism at Malmesbury Abbey to 17 North Wiltshire people today.

The Most Rev the Lord Archbishop Justin Welby immersed the men and women into a portable baptistery during what is believed to be the first ever visit to Malmesbury by an Archbishop of Canterbury.

There was applause from onlookers, guests and candidates as the Archbishop of Canterbury arrived.

He gave a sermon comparing the baptisms to ice bucket challenges before carrying out the immersions and confirmations.

Andrew Carnegie, who grappled with a knife-wielding thug who raided a Malmesbury jewellery shop in 2012, was one of those to be baptised as well as his wife, Adele.

The baptisms are part of a number of events involving the Archbishop during a three day visit to the Diocese of Bristol this weekend.
