Retired engineer John Mead hated to see fallen apples wasted and so set about making a press to benefit a whole village with their juice.

Mr Mead, 77, of The Street, All Cannings said: “This summer I decided to make a press so everyone could juice the fruit.”

He’s found the apple press is a hit with neighbours who have brought along their windfalls and left over fruit to be juiced.

He said: “They can then take it home and drink it or turn it into cider.”

Mr Mead is also captain of the Bell Tower in All Cannings and is involved with the village’s community shop.

He moved to All Cannings 10 years ago with his wife Belinda to be near family who live in Devizes.
