Villagers enjoyed a party fit for a queen on Saturday at this year’s Pewsey carnival royalty selection.

The search for this year’s royalty was held at Cooper’s Field with Eleanor Smith crowned queen out of eight entrants.

Granddaughter of the late carnival stalwart Clifford ‘Cossor’ Goldsworthy, Hannah Parsons was chosen as carnival princess, beating off competition from four others.

Lauren Pound and Louise Banting were appointed as the queen’s attendants, with Finley Johnson selected as prince and Lily Banting, Louise’s sister, as flower girl.

Committee member Heather Lovelock, who organises the royal selection, said: “It was a really enjoyable evening. We had a really good turnout not just for entrants but of people supporting too.”

All of the royalty will now go to dressmakers in Pewsey to have their royal robes custom made.

The queen also received a cheque for £150 and the two attendants were given £100 each.

The carnival queen is a Pewsey tradition which dates back to at least 1932, when the queen was Molly Andrews.Over the years a princess and flower girl were added with the most recent addition to the Pewsey royal family being the prince.

Bernie Bradshaw, Pewsey Carnival chairman, said: “I’m sure Eleanor will throw herself into her royal office with gusto.

“The carnival queen’s first official duty will be the switching on of the carnival lights. After that she and her attendants, and the younger royals, will attend all the events throughout carnival fortnight.”
