Wiltshire Mind is starting a new peer support group for unpaid carers in Devizes.

The mental health charity initially ran the project in Trowbridge and said it helped carers feel less isolated and take a break from their role.

The project is funded by Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group and sessions in Devizes will be run at the Crown Centre, St John’s Street on Fridays from 10.30am to 1pm starting on July 4 until October 31.

The sessions are free but numbers are limited to 15 and booking is essential.

There will be a combination of talking and activity-based therapy, as well as the chance to talk to other carers. Activities will include art, dance and meditation.

David Mckeigue, chief executive of Wiltshire Mind, said: “Wiltshire Mind is really excited about this project as it will allow us to extend our tested and proven peer group-based format into the new area of supporting carers.

“Many unpaid carers continue to be unseen and may be silently struggling to cope with their caring responsibilities or be unaware that there is support available for them.

“The 2011 census reveals that there are a total of 47,608 carers in Wiltshire providing unpaid support to someone, of which only around 7,000 are currently identified.”
