Teacher Ron Lester will have his winning entry from the Keevil Scarecrow Festival auctioned by BBC Flog It! presenter Paul Martin tomorrow.

Mr Lester, who is a design and technology teacher at Maltravers School, Springfield Road, Westbury, created a character from a JRR Tolkien novel for the festival.

It impressed the competition’s judge, antiques expert Mr Martin, so much that he will be selling it to the highest bidder at the Henry Aldridge and Son auction house in Devizes.

It is scheduled to be the first lot of the day to go under the hammer and all the money raised will go Keevil Primary School.

Charlotte Martin, Paul’s wife and one of the organisers of the village event, said: “We raised £8,000 from the festival and it would be great if we could get another couple of hundred from the auction.

“It should go to a good home, because it was more like a work of art than a scarecrow.”
