THE England squad may not have got the result they were after on Saturday but it was smiles all round for the Marlborough Youth Football Club at their end-of-season fundraiser.

The club used their annual end-of-season player awards, which coincided with England’s first World Cup game, to fundraise for the Devizes Opportunity Centre.

Six months ago their under-11s manager, Mick Kerin, experienced first-hand the work that the centre does when his three-year-old son, Paddy, went through intensive therapy there after being diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder.

On Saturday Marlborough Rugby Club was transformed into the Copacabana for the event which included a Zumba dance-off led by instructors from Marlborough-based Movida.

MYFC chairman Jon Davidson said: “It went very well; it was a really nice day for the kids to celebrate.

“We tried to have parents versus kids for the dance-off but it just turned into a riot for the kids with the parents pushed to the sidelines so obviously the kids won.

“They got to release 500 balloons, which had taken four hours to blow up that morning, from the goal which was really nice to see.”

Around 300 people attended the event which raised £227.67 for the centre.

Medals and trophies were also handed out to 173 youngsters and the visitors took part in football challenges.
