Wiltshire police will have extra officers on duty tonight ahead of England’s World Cup game against Uruguay, which kicks off at 8pm.

Sgt James Brain, of Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon police, said: “Tonight we are expecting more people out on the streets and more people drinking earlier in the day.

“Wiltshire Police wants fans to enjoy the World Cup but to not spoil it by drinking excessively.

“There will be additional officers out across Wiltshire and Swindon tonight to ensure that there is a known police presence and to respond quickly and effectively to any reported incidents.”

Police across the county said England’s opening match against Italy on Saturday, which started around 11pm, was largely trouble free.

There was a fight in Devizes Market Place, in which two police officers were injured, but it happened two hours after the game ended and police are not linking it to the World Cup.

Richard Jennings, manager of The Pheasant Carvery in Bath Road, Chippenham, said: “We had no loutish behaviour, they always behave themselves in here.”

Monty Hadrill, landlord of The Bell by the Green pub in Devizes, said: “There were about 500 people here.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere and we had no issues whatsover. It was a good evening.”

Jerry Kunkler, landlord of Moonrakers in Pewsey, said: “The pub was full and it was a very good atmosphere.

"Even though people were disappointed with the result it was still a good atmosphere because they were happy with how England played and everyone was on their best behaviour.

“This is my eighth World Cup at the pub and I can see that behaviour patterns have changed. You don’t get the violence anymore.”
