Wiltshire Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses following an assault on two police officers in Devizes who intervened in a brawl near the Corn Exchange.

The officers were assaulted after being called at about 3.10am on Sunday.

One was knocked unconscious while the other sustained facial injuries and both were taken to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

They have now been released and Wiltshire Police tweeted this morning to say both were recovering well.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

One, aged 24, has been released on police bail pending further enquiries and the other, aged 22, remains in custody.

The disorder took place outside the Corn Exchange and up to Barclays Bank, involving about 20 people, although not all were fighting.

Supt Nick John, of Wiltshire Police, said today: “We can’t rule out the fact it happened a few hours later but there’s nothing to suggest it was linked to the World Cup match.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
