A police officer was left unconscious after attending a large fight in Devizes during England's first World Cup game.

The fight was the only large incident related to the football that police were called to across Wiltshire last night.

Police attended the Market Place following reports of a large group of people fighting, and during the incident, two police officers were seriously assaulted.

One of the officers was knocked unconscious and further assaulted while in this state. A Wiltshire Air Ambulance crew treated one of the officers at the scene.

Both officers then received treatment at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, and were then released.

Following the incident, two men aged 22 and 24, were arrested. They are currently in custody.

It is believed footage of the fight, near the Corn Exchange, was caught on several mobile phones and police are urging any witnesses, in particular anyone with this footage, to get in touch immediately.

Call police on 101 or Crimestoppers where information can be left anonymously if preferred on 0800 555 111.
