Royal Wootton Bassett High Street has traffic lights in place while work is carried out on the town hall.
The work, which is expected to take up to six weeks, is essential to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the town hall and to protect and preserve the landmark.
Scaffolding will be put up around the building and temporary traffic lights have been put in place.
A town council spokesman said: “We offer apologies for the inconvenience this is likely to cause motorists, but as trustee for the town hall and Trust Charity (whose aim is to protect and preserve the town hall) we are responsible for this iconic and lovely old building.
“Thank you also to everyone for their patience while the work goes ahead.”
