Families in Corsham are being urged to have their say on future uses for the town’s police station, which is being sold by Wiltshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson.

A public consultation is underway after the Priory Street station was put on the market for £450,000. The town’s Neighbourhood Policing Team is to move into its new home at the Springfield Campus later this year.

Fourteen separate bids have so far been received, 12 for housing development and two for office facilities, with residents concerned about the impact of building houses on the site.

Priory Street resident Claire Moore said: “The police commissioner has sent out a press release but there has been no indication of a leaflet drop, so a lot of people don’t even know the police station is for sale.

“We just feel that something needs to be done to inform people that they can have their say, as it’s quite an important issue.

“We had a residents’ meeting last Monday and 98 per cent were in favour of a commercial bid. We are hoping it would be doctors’ surgery or something like that. Because of what’s going about the lack of houses in the country the police and crime commissioner and Wiltshire Council may feel pressured into selling it for houses, but do we really need more in Corsham?”

Details of the sale can be found at www.wiltshire-pcc.gov.uk, with public comments welcomed until a consultation into the sale ends on June 5. Email comments to pcc@wiltshire.pcc.pnn.gov.uk
