Calne’s annual duck race takes place tomorrow and volunteers have cleared the River Marden to provide a smooth journey from start to finish for more than 3,000 ducks.

The duck race is in its 28th year and is organised by the Lions Club of Calne. It is one of the town’s biggest events and raised more than £7,000 for local charities last year.

There are three different races, one for the general public and two races for businesses and schools using larger ducks that are decorated with feathers, sequins and paint.

Tickets for each duck are £1 each and this year there are only a handful of paper tickets left for the Lions to sell, although more tickets are available online.

The day will also include community stalls at The Wharf, next to Marden House, a fun fair in the bottom Sainsbury’s car park and a new business fair in the town hall.

This begins at 10am and later the ducks will wind their way down the river from the Co-op car park bridge, past the library to the finish line near Marden House.

Volunteers from the Lions and Castlefields River and Park Association got their wellies on to wade through the river last Sunday, fishing out items including skateboards and a trolley.
