Pupils from a Bradford on Avon school won the first Wiltshire Young Choir of the Year contest on Saturday.

Nearly 250 young singers from eight junior schools vied for the title at St John’s Church Devizes in a competition organised by the committee of Devizes Junior Eisteddfod.

After an entertaining evening, chairman and chief adjudicator Michael John-son announced that the choir of Christ Church Primary School, who call themselves Vocalcoro, had won.

The 47-strong choir, under the direction of Helen Harris, with Victoria Jamie-son on piano, were first to perform.

Mrs Harris, co-ordinator of music at the school, said: “The children all screamed when they found out.

“They are hard-working, committed individuals who are a delight to work with.”

Their renditions of Wade in the Water, Winter Solstice and Help Me Find a Dream were enough to guarantee them the win over brilliant efforts from Corsham Primary School; Dilton Marsh Primary School; Ivy Lane Primary School, Chippenham; Nursteed Primary School, Devizes; Queen’s Crescent Primary School, Chippenham; St Mary’s School, Calne; and St Mary’s RC Primary School, Chippenham.

Mr Johnson’s fellow adjudicators were Laura Ingram Hill and Philip Springate.

After presenting the trophy, Mr Johnson said: “We weren’t prepared for such a high standard from all the competitors. This made it very difficult to choose a winner and all the schools can be very proud.”

He said it was hoped to run the competition again in 2016.

Devizes Junior Eisteddfod itself will take place on November 14 and 15 and syllabuses and entry forms are now available.
