Heroic effort brings out visitors for second Hilmarton Scarecrow trail
Updated 12:22pm Thursday 15th May 2014 in News
Hilmarton’s second scarecrow trail was a hit with families, who enjoyed guessing the names of scarecrows on the theme of heroes and villains.
The trail, over the weekend, attracted more than 400 people and included scarecrow versions of Lord Voldemort, a Power Ranger and Wonder Woman.
The trail raised £1,800 for the village pre-school, primary school, church and a fund to help three-year-old Ollie Baker to walk.
Ollie, from Lyneham, goes to Hilmarton Pre-school and has a form of cerebral palsy.
He needs money for an operation that is not available on the NHS.
The trail started from the community rooms in Poynder Place, where there were also stalls and sideshow attractions.
On Sunday, at 4pm, Spiderman delighted children by dropping by to announce the winners of a raffle and a colouring contest.
Families taking part in the trail were able to vote for their favourite scarecrow.
The Harpums family won the competition with their little yellow Minions, inspired by the film Despicable Me.
The Maddox family took second place with Dangermouse and Jacob Meakin, from Goatacre, came third after creating the Wicked Witch of the West.
Organiser Natalie Doust said the Harpum family had deserved their win, after having to spend time re-painting their Minions because they got soaked by rain the day before.
She said: “It was raining so hard, the paint started to run on the little minions. So they took them in, repainted them and put them back out again.
“We’re really, really pleased with how well it went, considering the weather.
“I would like to thank all the committee for all their hard work and everyone else who donated cakes, came along and helped to make it a fantastic event.”
