Disabled people in the Devizes area raising money to help themselves and others when they take part in Devizes PHAB Club’s 31st wheelchair push and walk on Saturday.

Dozens of wheelchair users and their friends will set off from the Nursteed Centre in Nursteed Road at 3pm when deputy mayor and mayoress, Roger and Giovanna Giraud-Saunders, start the entrants on two circuits of the town.

The event was first held in 1983 at Keevil airfield. The colourful spectacle with prizes for fancy dress and hats now follows a route around Devizes – from the Nursteed Centre into Sarum Drive, Pans Lane, Southbroom Road, The Green and Nursteed Road.

Other charities can benefit as well – 50 per cent of the sponsorship raised by each entrant can go to their own chosen charity and the other 50 per cent to PHAB.

Organiser Michael Braund said: “The wheelchair push and walk has become a very popular event since it started in 1983 with over £19,500 raised for other charities. We urgently need more volunteers to come forward as wheelchair pushers as we always have more members wanting to take part than we have people to push them.”

Money raised will go towards buying converted minibuses used by PHAB to take members to and from social events and shopping.
