An event encouraging parishes to take on defibrillators and giving practical advice on how to use them is being held in Chippenham next Thursday.

One Stop Shop for Your Heart has been organised by Alison Butler, rural representative for Chippenham Area Partnership, who said there was a need for more automated external defibrillators, especially in rural areas where emergency services may respond more slowly.

She said: “I’ve found that parish groups are still unsure about taking on a community defibrillator.

“This event is about demystifying the defibrillator, raising awareness of the need to take one on. People are uncomfortable with something that gives you an electric shock but it actually talks you through the process.”

Presentations at the free event at Stanley Park will demonstrate how to use a defibrillator and how to perform CPR, and give information on issues such as planning considerations, funding sources, and liability.

The event will be attended by representatives from the emergency services and there will be a chance to talk to groups that have already taken on defibrillators.

Miss Butler said: “If Chippenham’s defibrillators were all on a map it would look good, but not all are public access, some are only available in opening hours.”

Coun Peter Hutton secured funding for the event from Chippenham Area Board. He said: “It is a good project to highlight the part defibrillators can play in the community.”

The event is on May 15 from 10am to 3pm.
