Devizes Tennis Club has completed work to all seven of its courts, off London Road, at a total cost of about £50,000.

After several years of putting up with deteriorating surfaces and poor drainage the club decided to resurface six of its courts and respray one to have them ready for play over at least the next decade.

Work started on the first three courts in October 2012 but winter set in early and the opportunity to lay the asphalt was delayed until March last year.

But work on the second three courts was completed much more quickly.

It started in February and by April 16 club members and opponents were able to play the first matches of the summer season on the new surface.

Chairman Penny Croutear said the purple and green colours had been chosen from a wide variety available, in contrast to the standard two greens or red and green.

"We wanted something different, bright and cheery and encouraging people to want to play," she said.

"The new colours are especially good under the lights at night and by daylight the line markings are clearer.

"Line calls are easier to make - no need for Hawk-Eye - and it reminds us all of Wimbledon, which has club colours of purple and dark green.

Devizes Tennis Club funded the project, each set of three courts costing around £24,000 to revamp.

And anyone can play on them during its open days on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, from 10am-2pm.

The initiative is part of the Lawn Tennis Association's Great British Tennis Weekend bid to get more people playing tennis.
