Devizes tattoo shop gets council agreement

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: A tattoo shop has been given Devizes Town Council approval A tattoo shop has been given Devizes Town Council approval

Despite disquiet about a proposed tattoo studio opening in Devizes town councillors decided not to object to it.

The town council’s planning committee was considering a planning application by Thomas Swift to open a tattoo studio in the former Michael David hairdressers in Northgate Street. He has applied for a change of use.

Coun Andy Johnson said: “I really don’t think another tattoo studio is appropriate for our town.”

Coun Nigel Carter said: “The proposed studio is for a small part of a building that is largely residential.

"While I share Coun Johnson’s reticence about tattoo studios, I’m confident that given its location it will not be a problem.”

Coun Ted East, chairman of the planning committee, said: “I was reading an article about tattooing and it seems to be more a middle class thing these days.”

The committee agreed there were no valid reasons for objecting and the application will be determined by Wiltshire Council.

The town council haven't got a clue what this town needs and doesn't need. Just look around, people are shopping elsewhere, because Devizes doesn't offer what residents need.

Although we are a nice little market town, we also need some big players to attract people fron out of town to visit. We can't rely on out so called heritage to sustaine our businesses.

Open your eyes town council!!! Let some of the big boys in and see the smaller independents reap the benefits as well.

Ok Undy1973, Exactly who do you suggest our Town Council allow into the town?
Do you wish our town to be just like all the others with the same high street shops.

If you dont like it then why live here when you could move to Trowbridge.

Also as with housing, if we invite large companies to take up space on the outskirts of town this will only add to the traffic congestion.

This isn't about big companies, this is about a local guy who wants to run a business in town. These councillors seem to be allowing their own prejudices to influence their decisions.

Coun Ted East, chairman of the planning committee, said: “I was reading an article about tattooing and it seems to be more a middle class thing these days.”

How out of touch can they be? Are they making planning decisions on what class they appeal to? Lets get rid of all the working class people, Devizes doesn't need them. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps if more people under 50 stopped using Facebook, Twitter etc to moan about their town and elected to represent the town as a councillor then we would have a more balanced view. You have only got to look at the make up of any council in the county to see this.
Too many people are not willing to give up their time to do Council work or School Governors because it doesnt come with any pay.
