Devizes woman Chrissy Leonard-Nelson has been turning heads with her outlandish headwear.

Ms Leonard-Nelson, 63, is wearing colourful wigs and hats after having her head shaved on Tuesday last week to raise money for child burns victims in Uganda.

The retired teacher is asking people to sponsor her to wear a wig or a hat for two hours a day until her hair grows back.

She did not have her hair cut for more than six months when she was volunteering in Kasese in Uganda.

On Tuesday last week her hair was shaved off at Kadiem hair salon in Maryport Street. Her wigs and hats come courtesy of the props department at The Wharf Theatre.

She said: “People who know me said ‘what are you wearing?’ but it’s a laugh and people have been generous in sponsoring me. So far I have got about £800.”

Ms Leonard-Nelson hopes to raise £1,600 to pay for plastic surgery operations for two Ugandan children, Stanley and Jessica, aged eight and nine who were badly burned as infants.
