A-level art student Artur Pogorzelski isn’t yet a Constable, but the trainee police officer has been commended for his artistic skills.

The 18-year-old, who studies at Chippenham’s Sheldon School and lives in Trowbridge, has had his work exhibited at Corsham’s Pound Arts Centre, after winning its Young Open contest.

A pencil sketch of his brother won him the top prize in the contest, which was open to young amateur artists working in all mediums.

He said: “I was surprised to win as there were a lot of good pieces there, and this is the first time I have had my work exhibited.”

The sketch took 12 hours to complete, and has inspired him to stick with art when he finishes college and joins the police force.

He said: “My project was on family and relations, and my brother was at hand so I just drew him.

“I wasn’t going to go any further with art, but now I think I will spend more time at it.

“I start my special constable training next month in Devizes, then my probation is in Trowbridge.”

This was the first time the Pound Arts Centre had run the young artists’ contest.

Creative learning officer India Pocock said: “We had 52 entrants altogether, and we’re hoping to do it again in the future, as it got a really good response.

“There was a wide range of different pieces; sculpture, photographs and a good variety of mixed materials and collages.”

The exhibition of the top pieces runs until April 26.
