Devizes charity Community First has submitted plans for four houses to be built on its car park.
The planning application is part of a proposed redevelopment of the charity’s base in St Joseph’s Place, which would enable it to relocate to more modern premises.
The charity, which is Wiltshire’s rural community council, already has permission for its office building, Wyndhams, to be converted into two houses.
The latest planning application is seeking permission for four semi-detached houses on Community First’s car park. Ten car parking spaces would be provided, which is ten fewer than are there currently.
The application includes access for users of St Joseph’s Nursery to travel over the land as the nursery is at the rear of Wyndhams.
Community First has been at Wyndhams for more than 30 years, but chief executive Philippa Read said the building is too big and costly. The charity employs 60 staff, of which about 35 are based at the office. If planning permission is granted Community First would sell Wyndhams and use the money to rent or buy an office.
Mrs Read said: “We would like to stay in Devizes and we are looking at properties in Devizes. We don’t need as much space as we have at Wyndhams and we would like a building that is open plan and more accessible.”
