St Mary’s Sports Centre in Calne is organising a sponsored swimathon and run for Sports Relief.

The swimathon takes place on Saturday, March 22, from 2-4pm and Sunday, March 22, from 1-4pm. The run begins at 10am on Sunday, March 23.

Duty officer Johnathan Andrews said: “It’s a great opportunity for people that don’t exercise to use it as a bit of a starting block, or alternatively for those that need an event to train towards it’s a nice entry event. It’s generally a really day and we’ll have our fingers crossed for the weather.

“There are set distances that they have the option of covering, they can go as an individual or a team as well. It’s a good reason for everyone to come together, there’s a good community aspect to it and it’s a privilege for us to hold it really.”

The Calne leisure centre will also hold a swimathon on Saturday, March 22, from 2.30-6pm, with the option of swimming up to 5km which is 200 lengths of the pool.

Organiser Dave Smith said: “Obviously we’re a sports facility and all the money goes to Sports Relief, which funds sporting activities across the country.

“We have about ten people signed up at the moment and we’re looking for more. We’re just trying to advertise it on social media because it’s a good event for people to get involved with.

“Sign up on the Sports Relief website and we will sort the rest out down here."
