A culture and tourism working group, made up of businesses and organisations in Calne, has been given £3,000 for a community project.

The money, from the Department of Communities and Local Government, will be used for Our Place, which aims to improve life in the area.

It has targets including increasing footfall in the town to raising its profile as a place to visit by generating more events. Our Place has representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, Heritage Centre, Rotary Club, Marden House and the Bowood estate.

Chairman Judy Edwards, of Calne Town Council, said: “This funding is all about putting the heart into Calne. We hope to involve the community as widely as possible, to get people involved and excited about this project.

“There is so much happening in Calne and the villages already and the idea of Our Place is to make sure that everybody knows that and celebrates it.

“In addition, we hope to introduce some new initiatives that place Calne firmly on the map”.

The group will use the funding to take the project to the next stage, by organising events and recruiting more members.

It wants people who are specialists in leisure and tourism, or who are part of a community group not yet represented.
