Budding scientists will descend on St John’s next Saturday for the fifth annual Marlborough Science Fair.

The fair is run as part of the school’s Engineering Week and offers everyone the opportunity to experience exciting scientific worlds in a family environment.

Last year the event attracted more than 2,200 visitors and was was recognised by the British Science Association (BSA) for its continued outstanding contribution through its Engineering Week.

Since launching in 2010 it has won the BSA Award for best school fair in the country twice and this year it is shortlisted for the BSA’s top three secondary schools in the UK, with a judge coming on the day.

At the fair, science presenter Steve Allman will be wowing audiences with two shows and the planetarium will run six shows throughout the day. Pre-booking is recommended.

Organiser Sally Bere said: “There’s been quite a lot of interest and this year we have a completely new science presenter who has presented shows for the BBC and the Science Museum.

“One of them is a bubble show and it looks really great, and the other is science tricks.

“We always have the maths treasure hunt but this year we have a QR reader trail as well, which should be really fun.

“We get a lot of people that come back year on year but we also get a lot of new people who think they’ll pop in for an hour and end up staying all day.”

Exhibitors include the Electric Vehicle Company; emergency services; the Wiltshire Heritage Museum, the Institute of Physics, and the Bloodhound 1,000mph Driving Experience.

The free event runs from 11am-3pm. Booking forms can be found on the St John’s website www.stjohns.wilts.sch.uk
