Traffic in Long Street and the Market Place in Devizes could be limited to 20mph if Wiltshire Council takes the advice of the town council.
Town councillors were asked to nominate areas for 20mph limits at the planning meeting tomorrow.
They named Rotherstone, the narrow road past the cemetery used by drivers as a rat run to avoid congestion on New Park Street.
There was less unanimity about 20mph limits in Long Street, St John’s Street, the Market Place and Northgate Street up to Brewery Corner.
Mayor Pete Smith said: “We’ve got to be wary of new road safety measures. There has only been one death from a road traffic collision in recent years.”
