Police are warning Wiltshire supermarket shoppers to be vigilant after thieves distracted victims to steal their debit cards which were then used to withdraw cash and buy items.

On three occasions on Wednesday, February 19, it is believed the same two people targeted victims in Devizes, Trowbridge and Melksham.

The first incident happened around 12.30pm at Morrisons in Devizes.

A man and woman told the victim, a 78-year-old man, that he had dropped a £10 note whilst loading his car. He then checked his wallet before leaving the car park.

He later realised his debit card was missing and subsequent enquires showed it was used to withdraw £500 from an ATM in the town.

Less than three hours later, at around 3.15pm, the same couple were seen in Tesco car park in Trowbridge.

This time they approached a 78-year-old woman to say she had a nail in one of her tyres.

As the man helped her check it is believed her debit card was taken from her purse. The card was then used to withdraw £500 and make purchases of £490 at Argos and £90 at Boots.

Finally the couple were seen at 4.25pm in Sainsbury’s car park in Melksham.

Again they used the story of a £10 note on the ground to distract an 84-year-old man whose debit card again went missing. This was then used to withdraw £300.

Officers have released CCTV of two people they are keen to speak to in connection with these incidents.

Anyone who recognises those shown or who has any information about these incidents is asked to contact DC Jannette Challes from the Crime Management Unit in Melksham on 101.

Alternatively people can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously if they wish.
