Members of Rowde Village Shop committee are calling on locals to support its participation in a recycling collection contest.

The shop is taking part in the Wrappers to Riches scheme set up by McVitie's and TerraCycle to reduce the number of wrappers being sent to landfill.

The shop will earn points for the weight of each biscuit wrapper of any brand they send in for recycling and each point can be redeemed for a 1p contribution to a good cause.

It has taken part in the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade scheme since last year and so far has collected 864 wrappers. Also collected are used pens, some brands of empty yoghurt pots and old mobile phones.

Veronica Seedhouse, the shop manager, said: “Through TerraCycle’s recycling fundraising schemes we have saved 1,953 pieces of waste from landfill raising £76.92.

"All the money raised helps to fund the running of the shop which is a community enterprise and a vital resource for local people.”

The scheme aims to reduce the billions of wrappers being sent to UK landfill as a result of most local councils being unable to recycle the mixed plastic packaging biscuit wrappers are comprised of.

So far, McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade participants across the UK have saved over 190,000 waste biscuit wrappers from landfill raising over £6,000 for UK schools, charities and non-profit organisations.
