A woman whose niece spent her first five months in hospital, after being born weighing just 1lb 6oz, will run the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday to support Devizes Opportunity Centre.

Wiltshire Council employee Kate Macey, 32, has previously fundraised for the NICU unit at the Royal United Hospital, but this time has decided to donate her sponsorship to our Give Us A Chance campaign.

She wants to do everything she can to help the centre where her niece Mya Macey-Plested goes twice a week.

Mya, two, of Bowman’s Court, Melksham, has a number of spinal problems which means she is unable to walk or crawl.

Her mum Lauren Plested, 21, said: “I didn’t find out I was expecting until I was 23 weeks pregnant. I suffered pre-eclampsia and Mya was born at 28 weeks. I was very ill myself and Mya was so tiny and fragile it was a very difficult time. Having her has given me confidence and support from the centre makes a real difference.

“Mya has good speech and is definitely all there mentally, but I have to watch her all the time. She has a special support seat but she likes to sit on a little chair when she plays with her toys and if I take my eyes off her for a second she can topple over as she can’t balance as most children.

“Mya’s dad Ben and I aren’t together, but we share her care and we both want what is best for her and I am determined she will go to a mainstream school if at all possible.”
