PCSO Ali Duncan, 30, used to work in engineering but was tempted by a radio advert for PCSOs and has been in the role for six years.

He serves Chippenham town centre and spends a lot of his time on foot patrol. A typical day may involve dealing with antisocial behaviour, shoplifting and CCTV inquiries, sometimes assisting with warrants and traffic control.

He said: “It’s about engaging with the community. It’s different every day.

“You still get some people saying you’re a plastic cop but generally I think people appreciate the work that we do, especially elderly people, they appreciate the contact and the visible presence in the community.”
