A former Devizes landmark goes up for sale this weekend, at the Bath Road Business Centre salerooms of auction firm Aldridges.

The sign or ‘totem’ from Devizes railway station, which closed in 1966, will be under the hammer along with other memorabilia.

Auctioneer Alan Aldridge said: “There is always a lot of interest in railwayana, but this is particularly iconic as there will be bids from collectors of local history as well as railway items.”

Henry Aldridge and Son’s first auction of 2014 is looking to take up where its record-breaking 2013 left off. More than 750 lots are included in Saturday’s sale.

One of the star lots that Mr Aldridge expects to attract a lot of attention is an original Beatles Melody Maker Pop Poll Award from 1965, for Top British Vocal Disc for the band’s single, Ticket to Ride.

The solid silver award shows an inset figure playing a saxophone and was crafted by Garrard & Co.

Mr Aldridge said: “Any award related to the Beatles is exceptionally rare and to have one for such an iconic song is a rare opportunity for a collector. Interest is expected from the UK, United States and all over the world.”

A unique archive of items relating to King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother and the Royal Yachts will be offered for sale.

They were collected by and given to a member of the Royal household who rose to the position of Lt Comm-ander. His posts also included being Keeper of the Royal Apartments.

The highlight are two items from King George VI’s desk on board HM Yacht Victoria and Albert: an ashtray and sycamore desk companion and inkstand.

Another sought-after item is expected to be a menu from the last meal Edward VIII took on board the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1936, before he abdicated.

The owner, who has asked not to be named, wrote of it: “Because of the abdication crisis at the time, I believe this has historical significance as the way forward for both the nation and the armed forces were discussed before and during the luncheon.”
