AGE UK Wiltshire is encouraging people of all ages to take part in the Pancake Day races in Devizes.

The event, which is in its eighth year, is on March 4 in the Market Place from noon to 2pm. It raises money for Age UK.

Allison Davis, Age UK Wiltshire’s race organiser, said: “The races are such a fun way to celebrate Pancake Day with colleagues, friends and family. Each year the event has grown in popularity and we are proud that the races are now an established part of Devizes’ events calendar.

“Almost anyone can take part – all you need is a sense of fun and a pair of sensible shoes!

“The races are run in the lunch hour to allow teams from local businesses to join in. The adult races are organised as relays, with teams of four.

“We are also hoping to run children’s races and once again hope that the local schools will get involved. A challenge salver will be presented to the winning adult team. Fancy dress is optional.”

All profits from the races will go Age UK Wiltshire to support its work with local older people.

The charity, which is based in Devizes, provides information and advice, practical help, support and friendship to thousands of older people in Wiltshire each year.

Chief executive Brian Deeley said: “Demand for our services has never been higher from older people and their families. In difficult economic times we rely even more on public support and fundraising to help us to maintain those services.

“We hope that people will come along and enjoy the races, taste a pancake or two and help us to raise vital funds to support our work.”

Local businesses and organisations have already offered their help. The Black Swan Hotel is providing the pancakes and Devizes Rotary Club will act as stewards on the day. The charity is still keen to talk to others who might also be interested in getting involved. The prizes will be presented by Devizes mayor Pete Smith.
