Housing association residents across Wiltshire have given a much-needed boost to the region’s food banks.

In December, Sovereign Housing Association’s West of England panel donated £3,500 to the Trussell Trust, which provided emergency food and support across the UK.

Panel chair Sarah Watts said: “We know that many residents are facing unprecedented challenges this winter with increasing bills, lower incomes, benefit cuts and extreme weather.

“As a result food banks are under more pressure too, and they rely on donations and the kindness of volunteers. We all felt very strongly that it was the right thing to do and that the money should be made available to support the Trussell Trust.”

Trussell Trust network manager, James Milton, said: “Sadly, food banks are seeing increasing numbers of clients requesting food that does not require cooking, because they are trying desperately to minimise bills or have had utilities disconnected.

“This money will help to make a real difference to the 20,000 adults and children receiving food bank assistance.”

Each of Sovereign’s six regional panels manages a grant programme, making funding available to support local projects and organisations that make a positive difference to communities. To find out more about the panels and how to apply for funding please visit www.sovereign.org.uk
