Police stations in Chippenham and Corsham have gone on the market with a total price tag of £2.45m.

Both sites are likely to be sold for housing or possibly to build care homes.

Officers moved out of the building in Wood Street, Chippenham, in March last year and set up a new base at Monkton Park council offices, while Corsham officers are moving to the new community campus at Springfield this spring.

The Chippenham site covers nearly 2.5 acres and is priced at £2m. Nick White of selling agents Carter Jonas said: “The site went on the market last week and we have already had a lot of interest from national PLC companies as well as local developers.

“There is a shortage of land in the town centre and as it is a brown field site that makes it more appealing to some.”

He said Wiltshire Council had indicated it would welcome the redevelopment and regeneration of both police station sites and it was likely a residential proposal would be favourably received. But he said there was also potential for a care home or sheltered accommodation.

He said: “The Chippenham land has a lot of potential uses as it is in a good position just a short walk from the town centre.

“It is impossible to say how many houses could be accommodated on the site. It will be up to potential developers to come up with a plan.”

A former school building, dating from Victorian times, is also on the site and although it is not listed it is in the conservation area and planners have said they would like it to be incorporated into a development scheme rather than demolished.

Other existing buildings include the two-storey brick-built police station itself and a single-storey store room.

The final closure of the old Chippenham police station meant the inquiry office was under the same roof as the neighbourhood police team and response officers, who had already moved to Monkton Park.

The office is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, but closed on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Corsham police station in Priory Street, which has a guide price of £450,000, is situated in a residential area less than half a mile from the town centre.

It consists of a single-storey police station and a two-storey former police house.

Offers for both sites have to be submitted to the chief executive, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon by 5pm on March 13.

A spokesman for the Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner said: “The money will be earmarked for future investment in estate, such as refurbishment of current estate.

“These moves are in line with a wider estate strategy to share public buildings where possible.

“It is about benefiting from greater partnership working, improved customer service and being more cost effective in the current climate of reducing public sector budgets.”
