Two firms of builders’ merchants are moving from their Devizes premises, amid rumours that Tesco wants to build a supermarket on the site.

Jewson and Graham are leaving their adjoining sites on the Garden Trading Estate, London Road, and will be opening new centres in nearby Folly Road.

Both of the builders’ merchants are owned by the French company Saint Gobain.

It is understood that Tesco already has an option on one of the pieces of land and could be in negotiation for the other.

Tesco, which already has a store in Devizes town centre, this week said the sites were on its radar, but claimed no purchases had been made.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of the site, but we are aware of hundreds of sites across the company. No deals have been done.”

Workers at Graham, who leases its town premises, expect to be in their new building on the old Selectabook site by the end of the year.

The Wiltshire councillor for Roundway, Laura Mayes, said she had not heard about a possible Tesco proposal but felt the Garden Trading Estate was no longer best used as commercial premises.

She said: “I was only thinking, the other day, that now there is so much housing in that area it does not really feel appropriate any more and it might be better for residential.

“But there is already a lot of traffic pressure on London Road, so whatever happens it could be controversial.”
